Chapter 36

Karen

Zoey hadn’t come on the expedition to Old Sturbridge Village. She’d been excused because she had bad cramps and Karen had thought of using that excuse herself, but when she’d suggested it, Zoey had said, “I need some time by myself, Karen. I really do feel lousy. Go.”

So she’d gone and Becky had made that scene and Mr. Doherty had blown up at her and Cassidy had ridden to Becky’s rescue, of course, like some fucking white knight on a charger. They’d come back together, walked into the stupid bank together.

Becky then proceeded to stay by Cassidy’s side the rest of the time and even sit beside her on the bus back to school. Abby gave up her usual sitting-beside-Cassidy seat because of course Abby wanted to rub it in too, show Karen what a terrible person she had been for divulging Becky’s secret.

Everyone was against her. Ever since she’d told people that Becky had lied, she’d been treated as if she were the one who had done something outrageous. What was the point of the List if you could lie and get away with it? Why was it so wrong to have told the truth? They acted as if she’d turned Becky in to the police and landed her in jail.

Karen sat on her own at the back of the bus and counted the minutes until they got back and she could see Zoey again.

Because there had to be a way to get things back to normal, to how it had been with Zoey.

She knew she had been annoying, but she found it so hard to stop herself. All she wanted was to please Zoey. Was that so bad? She guessed so because Zoey was drawing away from her and not sharing things anymore and acting as if they’d never been as close as they actually had been. So she had to figure out a way to make it the way it had been again.

Zoey hadn’t invited her to New York for the February break yet, but she would, Karen knew. Zoey needed her there: an ally against her mother, a friend to talk to and walk the streets with. They’d go back to the same diner they’d gone to at Thanksgiving and sit and smoke and talk. Talk about important, interesting things. Only this time Karen had been working hard to find out more about poetry and politics. Her grades might have slipped, but she could talk about the subjects Zoey was interested in now. She’d be able to contribute; they could talk nonstop for days.

Her fears had subsided after the misery of Friendship Weekend. Whatever had happened between Zoey and Cassidy, Zoey wasn’t spending more time with Cassidy. Whatever had transpired between them had been temporary. So it was just a case now of figuring out how to tune in to Zoey’s vibe again. Which would be easy in New York. That was all they needed: time away from Stonybridge—together.

“How are you feeling?” she asked when she finally got back to their room.
